Penpont Gala

Every year we have a gala week during the last week of the school term before we break up for the summer holidays.

We are very proud of our Gala, there is usually a varied program of events throughout the week with something for everyone.

Gala Week has just finished yet again it is over for another year, hopefully there will be some information for next years gala both before and during the events.

HISTORY of PENPONT GALAS 1891 to 2011

The Galloway Standard records the firstGala on 29th August 1891 advertised as “Penpont Sports

the first gathering since the Jubilee.

On Thursday 12th July 1892 it shows Sports at Penpont was observed as a holiday for the second year in

 succession. The weather was fine until near the close when there was a little rain but not sufficient to cause

 any cessation in the games and dancing which was engaged in to the accompaniment of some excellent music from the

Wanlockhead Brass Band.  (Note prizes)

June 1893 to June 1898 advertised as “Grand Gala Day at Penpont

Athletic Sports and other Amusements and Ploughing March; which has various races; football five sided competitions;

horse races; and music supplied by Wanlockhead Band.

From 1898 to 1948 see yearly “Ploughing Matches with sports.

Then from 1948 to 1952 see “Gala Day” which involved sporting events, fancy dress competitions and ending with dance.
